Despite being eclipsed by the generative AI juggernaut, here’s why yesteryear’s metaverse fanfare about AR and VR was no mirage for industrial manufacturing trendsetters.

researchers predicted that by 2025, 20% of Global 2000 manufacturers will include the industrial metaverse in their digital transformation roadmap to address advanced simulation, cross-domain collaboration, and safety.

Imaginative industrial manufacturers are considering AR and VR tools that integrate contextual real-time data company-wide for business innovation and resilience. Now that the initial metaverse hype has settled down, industrial manufacturers are scouting around to see how immersive experiences from augmented reality and virtual reality could deliver practical value to the organization.

“Manufacturers aren’t specifically asking about metaverse, but they are looking at advanced technologies to replicate real-world experiences,” said Ralf Heindoerfer, product owner of mixed reality solutions at SAP. “Leaders in some industrial sectors are realizing that components of the metaverse, such as VR and AR, can allow employees to collaborate for more informed decisions and greater efficiencies.

“Before breaking ground for physical construction, whether it’s an entirely new project or addition to existing buildings, manufacturers can use VR to mirror the look and feel of the facility,” said JuliaManufacturing. “Employees could try out the interaction patterns on the production floor assembly line and provide planners with feedback for improvements in machine placement based on their experiences.

“The earlier that organizations have sourcing, production, and usability feedback, the better they can innovate products for strategic business growth,” said Zinovieva. “Suppose you’re designing a super-lightweight engine. Engineers can build a product concept, and through VR-based tools, trial prototypes with shop floor managers and machinists.
