SANTA CLARA COUNTY — A man shot a sheriff’s deputy during a prolonged standoff on Sunday, then left his home while it was on fire and attempted to break into an armored vehicle, where he was shot by a police officer, authorities said.
Deputies were called shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday for a welfare check at a home on the 3000 block of Dryden Avenue near Gilroy, according to a news release from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. When they arrived, they attempted to communicate with a 35-year-old man, but he fired several shots from a gun at the deputies and into the neighborhood, according to the sheriff’s department.
The deputies retreated and called for help from the department’s crisis negotiators and emergency response team. The man continued to fire shots while authorities tried to contact him, striking a deputy at one point. Other deputies returned fire, but did not strike the man. The wounded deputy was taken to a hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.
As negotiations continued, a fire began within the building, authorities said. Around 3:30 p.m., the suspect came out of the home, still armed, and allegedly attempted to get inside a police armored vehicle that was already occupied. A Campbell police officer on the scene fired one round and struck the man, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition.
