San Francisco, among the first major U.S. cities to require a COVID-19 “vaccine passport” to enter restaurants, bars and gyms, will lift it Friday, marking the latest in a series of dropped pandemic mandates around the country as infection rates fall.

“The proof of vaccination and testing requirements served their purpose in keeping these spaces as safe as possible for staff and patrons,” San Francisco Health Officer Dr. Susan Philip said. “Rolling it back is part of coming out of crisis mode and learning to live with the virus.” The city and state dropped indoor mask requirements for visiting places like stores and businesses on Feb. 16 for vaccinated people and on March 1 for the unvaccinated. If they choose, those businesses are free to ask patrons to continue to wear masks, or provide proof of vaccination or a negative test.

Bleiman called the bar owners’ pact — requiring patrons to show proof of vaccination or negative tests to allow hard-hit businesses to reopen and avoid infections among staff and customers — “one of the proudest things we’ve ever done as a group.” That agreement inspired the city’sBut with the omicron variant’s winter case surge in retreat, and vaccination levels in the city at a high 83% according to health officials, he said it’s no longer needed.
