This is the first birth of endangered Sumatran tiger cubs at the San Diego Safari Park in at least 7 years, officials said

Two endangered Sumatran tigers were born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in July, the first such births of the species at the park near Escondido in seven years, officials said.

The pairing and subsequent births were the result of planning by the Sumatran Tiger Species Survival Plan, an Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ program overseen by conservationists that seeks to make sure breeding decisions for endangered animals are made with genetic diversity in mind.Zoo officials say there are an estimated 400 to 600 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. The species is considered critically endangered.

“We are elated about the birth of these tiger cubs,” Lisa Peterson, executive director of Safari Park, said in a statement. “It has been years since we’ve had cubs at Tiger Trail, and we can’t wait to share them with the community.” Including the two newcomers, the park has six Sumatran tigers. There are no Sumatran tigers at the San Diego Zoo; it has three Malayan tigers.
