San Diego leaders said they are joining the growing campaign, which began in 2017 in the Bay Area with the first-ever United Against Hate Week, to “empower local residents and communities to stand against racism and alter the course of growing intolerance.” Reported hate crimes spiked last year in the city of San Diego, jumping from 26 in 2020 to 46 in 2021 — an increase of about 77 percent, according to San Diego police data. More than half of those were racially motivated, with anti-Black bias accounting for 10 cases. Anti-Asian and anti-Hispanic bias accounted for four cases each.
At 10 a.m. Thursday the Somali Bantu Association of America will host an in-person “Stop the Hate” tea and talk at the San Diego Police Department’s multicultural community relations center in City Heights.
