San Diego County to assess scope of gun-related violence in region [Breaking]
San Diego County will take a close look at gun violence across the region, existing efforts to address the problem, as well as any gaps in programs and services.On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors directed staff to seek a contractor to carry out what is known as a needs assessment. That was the recommendation from a group of county employees and community members who work to address gun violence.
The Gun Violence Reduction Working Group was convened after the Board of Supervisors in October asked staff to develop options to curb and disrupt gun violence. The group did not identify specific strategies or potential solutions. Instead, it suggested developing a needs assessment to better understand the scope of gun-related violence in the region, including identifying which communities are impacted most, understanding available resources and listening to community concerns.
County staff said it would likely take six months to find a contractor and another four to six months to complete the assessment and finalize a report. In the meantime, the county plans to look for existing data on gun violence in the region, identify groups that work to address gun violence and learn from other regions that launched efforts to target gun violence.
Both Desmond and Anderson also called on the county to consider more perspectives moving forward. Desmond said he was disappointed that the county’s working group did not include advocates of the Second Amendment. “Most of them advocate for gun safety,” Desmond said. “It’s critically important that we have a diversity of opinions on the table.”County staffers said they plan to look at various types of gun violence, including suicide, and include more voices in the working group.
