Construction projects on county land must use skilled, trained workers and pay them prevailing wages, the Board of Supervisors decided in a split vote last week.
The county’s action, called the Working Families Ordinance, requires contractors for construction projects on county land to use skilled, trained workers and pay prevailing wages on projects over $1 million. It also requires employers on county-leased land to provide paid sick leave and to ensure worker protections against retaliation and discrimination.“No one who works on county property or county projects should struggle with poverty or feel in danger of retaliation,” Lawson-Remer said.
“We’re continually told as a government that we need to run things like a business,” he said. “But then we take a public asset — being publicly owned land — and we allow such low wages as to require and make them eligible for the very services that we have to provide.” Consultants also calculated that workers for businesses that remained on county land could expect wage increases totaling $6.3 million. Balancing those gains against the losses, the report projected a negative regional economic impact of $22.6 million.
