The leader of the city-owned water utility will earn an annual salary of almost $600,000 after the SAWS board approved the raise this week.

SAWS board Chair Jelynne LeBlanc Jamison cited the “market competitiveness” of Puente’s salary, which was $516,381.Trustees discussed the raise privately during an executive session, according to the meeting’s agenda.Puente last received a salary increase in 2020, when the board approved a 4 percent raise. That followed a 5 percent raise in 2019.The increase comes little more than two months after the SAWS board awarded Puente a $94,000 bonus in April.
In 2021, Puente donated his $100,000 bonus to Project Agua, a SAWS initiative that provides emergency payment assistance to residential customers who have difficulty paying their water and sewer bills. Puente, a former state legislator, has led SAWS since 2008, when he was hired with a salary of $275,000.
