Traffic-monitoring video cameras and sensors will be installed during the next year along some heavily traveled San Antonio streets, providing additional data at the TransGuide operations center.San Antonio is installing cameras and radar detectors at intersections across the city., don’t fret. Officials say the new equipment, to be fully installed and operational in about a year, won’t be used to catch people speeding or running red lights.
Data from the system will help the city’s public works staff and traffic engineers improve traffic flow and signalization. City public works spokesman Paul Berry said the engineers need constant, real-time monitoring data that currently isn’t available. “A lot of times, we’ll hear about traffic being backed up, but when we get there, we don’t see it,” Berry said. “The main thing it’ll do is make sure our equipment is working properly.”Intelligent transportation systems that employ cameras and sensors are nothing new to San Antonio, but they have been limited mostly to highways. The local TransGuide system began operating in 1995 with coverage of 26 miles around downtown and inside Loop 410.
Public works employees who collect the new data from city streets work in coordination with Texas Department of Transportation staff at the TransGuide Operations Center, located at the Loop 410/I-10 interchange. Just over $1 million of the cost of the intelligent transportation system project, selected for funding through the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, will be covered by federal dollars, with the city providing a $259,460 local match. D&G Energy of McAllen offered the lowest of four bids and was selected for the work.

A 123-year-old landmark San Antonio home is for sale after nearly being torn downThe prospects for this Queen Anne-style home a block from the Alamodome looked dim until late 2020, when the city's Office of Historic Preservation began working to declare it an East Side landmark. Once boarded up and scheduled for demolition, the 125-year-old property has since landed that historical designation. Now fully restored, it hit the market a week ago for $849,900. Local preservationists stepped in to save the 2,900-square-foot home because it was designed by renowned architect Frederick Bowen Gaenslen, the Express-News reported in 2020. Gaenslen's other work includes the Incarnate Word Chapel, St. Anthony Catholic School and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Also adding to its historic significance, the five-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath residence was built for Nicholas Lee Petrich, a lumber magnate who helped fuel much of San Antonio's 1920s building boom, the daily also reported. This home is listed by Andy Patlan with Team Elite Group. All photos by Realtor.com.
