San Antonio plans to expand its cool pavement program and introduce a pilot that will target inner-city neighborhoods

The city of San Antonio is ramping up efforts to cool down neighborhoods and reduce the heat emanating from streets as another sweltering summer approaches. The city is launching a pilot program in four neighborhoods and also plans to put down more asphalt treatment that’s been shown to reduce street temperatures. Last year was San Antonio ’s hottest ever. The city racked up 75 days of triple-digit temperatures, breaking its 2009 record of 59 by August.

Melnick said his office is working with the city’s Public Works Department to determine where to pour more of the treatment. San Antonio officials are following the progress of cities such as Los Angeles and Phoenix, which have sizable street treatment programs. Los Angeles has 100 miles of cool pavement-covered streets. “The real thing we’re hearing is it's about concentrating,” Melnick said. “It's not enough just to put a block here or there.
