San Antonio Brahmas focused on continued growth entering matchup with Houston Roughnecks
ORLANDO, FL - FEBRUARY 26: San Antonio Brahmas quarterback Jack Coan looks to pass during a game between the Orlando Guardians and the visiting San Antonio Brahmas on February 26, 2023 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, FL. As Orlando Guardians quarterback Deondre Francois lofted a pass toward the corner of the end zone, wideout Cody Latimer and San Antonio Brahmas defensive back Jack Koerner began jockeying for position.
But this time, on the opening play of the fourth quarter of San Antonio’s 30-12 win last week in Orlando, Ward said he decided to go with his gut. The penalty was overturned, putting the Guardians in fourth-and-goal. Ward tweaked San Antonio’s game day operations from Week 1 to Week 2, sending the coordinators upstairs into the booth so they can have a clearer view of the field. Ward provides the field-level perspective, saying he’s been very vocal “throwing my two cents in” for both offense and defense.
After San Antonio led the XFL in rushing during the opening week of the season, Orlando committed to taking away the ground game, holding the Brahmas to negative rushing yards in the opening half. “When we came in, we were all rusty. We hadn’t played football in a while,” Coan said. “We were adjusting back to the game and learning a brand-new offense. As we get more and more comfortable with this offense and with each other and build chemistry, we’re just going to continue to get better and better.”
“He’s loving every moment of it. His mindset is this is a business opportunity, for him to showcase to everybody what he can do,” Ward said. “He’s probably his own worst critic. He’s always down on himself. ‘I have to get better.’ That’s what I love.”
