Two San Antonio-area restaurants' chefs were in the running for the Best Chef: Texas category of the James Beard Foundation's 2023 Restaurant and Chef Awards.
Gulf shrimp incorporates fried yuca, coconut rice, pureed sunchoke and chile oil at Clementine, the Southern-influenced restaurant from chefs John and Elise Russ in Castle Hills.The James Beard Foundation named chef Benchawan Jabthong Painter of the Houston restaurant Street to Kitchen as the recipient of its Best Chef: Texas honors during the 2023 Restaurant and Chef Awards on Monday evening.
The decision sent chef John Russ of the Castle Hills restaurant Clementine and the pitmaster duo of Ernest Servantes and David Kirkland of the hit barbecue spot Burnt Bean Co. in Seguin home without any hardware. It also marked 22 years of San Antonio-area chefs coming up just short of a win during the prestigious ceremony, which is often likened to the Academy Awards of the culinary world.
Neither Russ or Servantes are newcomers to the James Beard Awards. Both were named semifinalists in 2022's contest for Best Chef: Texas, but did not advance to the final round. This year, Burnt Bean co-owner and fellow pitmaster Kirkland and Servantes received a joint nomination. When the awards semifinalists were announced in January, San Antonio was well represented with seven individuals or teams put up as candidates in multiple categories. The contenders in national categories included Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin of Best Quality Daughter as Emerging Chef, Marcus Baskerville and Weathered Souls Brewing Co. for Outstanding Bar, and Bakery Lorraine pastry chef Anne Ng for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker.Anthony Hernandez, middle, general manager of Burnt Bean Co.
