Relief pitcher Ryan Tepera, a former Astros critic, designated for assignment by Angels
Pitcher Ryan Tepera of the Los Angeles Angels walks back up the mound after giving up the go ahead run to the Boston Red Sox during the eighth inning at Fenway Park on April 15, 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts.as he is for being a former Brazoswood High School star, was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
The 35-year-old righthander has had a disastrous 2023 with the Angels, giving up seven earned runs in 10 relief appearances for a 7.27 ERA but the final straw came Saturday night when he blew a save opportunity in Cleveland. Tepera entered the game with a 6-4 lead with two runners on and one out in the eighth inning. Josh Naylor promptly greeted Tepera with a three-run homer to give the Guardians the lead, and Andrés Giménez added a solo shot to pad the advantage.
Tepera, who was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 19th round out of Sam Houston State in 2009, has had a strong nine-year big league career, highlighted by his 2021 season split between the Cubs and White Sox when he posted a 2.79 ERA and opponents hit just .164 against him.and, after a White Sox win in Game 3 of the series, Tepera alluded to the Astros' past sign-stealing violations, saying,"They've obviously had a reputation of doing some sketchy stuff over there.
If Tepera passes through waivers without being claimed, a likely scenario, another team can sign him to a pro-rated big league minimum contract while the Angels still pay him the rest of his contract.
