Rutgers falls to Michigan State on road due to horrendous shooting performance
- Rutgers dominated the glass on both ends. It scored 15 second-chance points off of 18 offensive rebounds, while holding Michigan State to six second-chance points on four offensive rebounds. Center Cliff Omoruyi played a big part, finishing with 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting and 12 rebounds, five coming on the offensive glass.- Michigan State shot the lights out from deep, hitting 12 of its 22 three-point attempts .
It did not help that Cam Spencer’s recent struggles continued. After a scorching start to the season where he shot 48.2% from the perimeter through the opening 16 games, Spencer has missed 12 of his last 15 attempts across the last two games after going 1-of-8 on three-pointers Thursday. He finished with eight points on 3-of-14 shooting, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Rutgers raced out to an early lead, scoring on six of its first 10 possessions to take a 14-5 lead within the first five minutes. The scorching start cooled off after the first media timeout and Michigan State took advantage, going on a 12-2 run to take its first lead four minutes later. The two sides traded haymakers from there, the lead changing six times over the following seven minutes until Michigan State took control.
The Spartans entered halftime with a six-point lead thanks to an 11-4 run in the final four minutes of the first half, a stretch fueled by their scorching three-point shooting. Entering the night shooting 32.5% on threes , Michigan State hit seven of 13 attempts from deep in the opening 20 minutes.The Spartans would lead the rest of the way, holding off the Scarlet Knights for the final 24 minutes of the game.
