Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky struck a more conciliatory tone during a joint news conference with NATO’s secretary general, personally thanking Jens Stoltenberg, as well as President Biden, for their support. For live updates follow along here:
NATO will invite Ukraine to become a member “when allies agree that conditions are met,” Stoltenberg said during the news conference with Zelensky, echoing language from a joint communiqué published Tuesday. “Today we meet as equals. I look forward to the day we meet as allies,” he added.
“The United States, along with G-7 leaders, will announce our intent to help Ukraine build a military that can defend itself and deter future attack,” said Amanda Sloat, National Security Council Director for Europe, in Vilnius Wednesday. Ukraine and its allies will negotiate “bilateral security commitments to help make this a reality,” she added.
