In a familiar subtext, the country’s ban leaves questions, particularly pertaining to next summer’s Olympics.

From 2012 to 2021, the last decade Russia could compete internationally, the country won about 16 percent of the total gymnastics medals at worlds and the Olympics, behind only the United States . ANTWERP, Belgium — The bubble teams that earned Olympic berths have celebrated, and the fields for the gymnastics team competitions at the Paris Games have been determined. Russia is not among the nations that will participate.

Long a global power in the sport, the country saw athletes competing under the banner of the Russian Olympic Committee win the team gold medals forgymnastics at the Tokyo Olympics.

Individuals from non-qualifying teams are securing spots at the Olympics based on their results at these world championships. But a limited number of opportunities remain for individuals to earn berths next year through the World Cup series and continental championships. Russian athletes would be in strong contention to claim these because the field of eligible gymnasts weakens as time goes on.

The Americans will arrive in Paris as the heavy favorites for gold in the women’s competition that will not feature their top challenger. The absence of Russia significantly improves the chance of the U.S. men’s team winning a medal; the United States has placed fourth or fifth at each Olympics and world championships since 2015, with Japan, China and Russia usually the best teams.
