Race draws 22,000 participants and thousands of spectators as the event returns to its traditional June date following pandemic shifts

Holding flowers after finishing, Vasi Gotsis, 22, traveled from Sinaloa, Mexico to attempt her first half marathon. A member of the High-Performance Studios running club, she liked the Mariachi bands and the humorous signs along the route. One near the finish line read “Remember, You Paid for This.”Runners in the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon run on State Route 163 in Mission Valley.
Penea was referring to the mile-long climb out of Mission Valley along state Route 163 to downtown. Race organizers have dubbed it “The 163 Highway to Hill,” a nod to the well-known AC/DC song.
