ICYMI: The Guardians grinded out a win today and a series split against the Blue Jays.
Syndergaard limited Toronto to a run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings to earn his first win since joining the Guardians at the MLB trade deadline earlier this month. After walking leadoff hitter Danny Jansen in the second, Syndergaard gave up back-to-back singles to Nathan Lukes and Santiago Espinal that put the Blue Jays in front by a run. Manager Terry Francona said Syndergaard executed his breaking pitches as well as he has since joining the club.
Francona said it was fun to see the Guardians react to Tena’s day of firsts, despite the stressful innings that followed. “He’s going to be able to handle himself pretty well,” Francona said. “It’ll be interesting to see as he gains experience, and I don’t even just mean here, I mean just playing. He’s so young. He kind of has all the tools, and I know this year he has not been hitting the ball of the ballpark as much as he did last year. Those kinds of things can come with experience and at-bats.”
With runners at first and second, Trevor Stephan struck out George Springer on a fastball at the bottom of the strike zone. Home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak ejected Springer for arguing the call, and Toronto manager John Schneider was also tossed. It was Schneider’s second ejection of the season and fourth of his managerial career.
