Suspected fragments of a Russian drone have been found on the territory of Romania, officials from the NATO country said on Wednesday, following days of denials that one may have fallen within its borders during Moscow’s bombardment of neighboring Ukraine.If confirmed that the parts belong to a Russian drone, it would represent “a serious violation of the sovereignty and territory of Romania, a NATO ally,” Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said.
In recent weeks, Russia has stepped up its attacks on Ukrainian ports and grain silos on the banks of the River Danube, which runs along the Romanian-Ukrainian border before flowing into the Black Sea. The debris was found in the vicinity of the village of Plauru, according to the Defense Ministry. The village lies on the banks of the Danube opposite the Ukrainian town of Izmail, which has been targeted by Russia several times in recent days, according to local officials. Additional measures will be taken to strengthen the monitoring and security capabilities of Romania’s airspace at its borders, the ministry said.
