Fans, known as the Mellogang, displayed their love for Marshmello all over the Rodeo grounds. Groups of young girls wore T-shirts. Young men wore hoodies. Families brandished homemade and lavish, store-bought copycat helmets. Inside NRG Stadium, they waved glowsticks and bought up every available piece of merchandise at the stands.
The cheers started as soon as the truck pulled onto the dirt floor to drop Marshmello at the stage. A large white head bobbed through the darkness, up the stairs and ran across the stage to get in position. The Marshmello party started as soon as the lights rose. He wore a Rockets jersey and frequently addressed the crowd, commanding them to “get up, get up!” Not that they needed convincing. Everywhere you looked, people, were dancing.
The barrage of beats came at a breakneck pace. His setlist included Houston rappers Megan Thee Stallion and Don Toliver; Rihanna and Selena Gomez; and his own originals, including “Outta My Mind” and “One Thing Right,” a collaboration with fellow. There were tunes from Post Malone, Kendrick Lamar and even a Vengaboys breakdown.
“Friends,” his collaboration with singer Anne-Marie, inspired a fervent singalong.
