If Sam Hilliard is going to ever fulfill his potential, it won't be with the Rockies.
The 28-year-old appeared in 70 games last season, hitting .184 with a .544 OPS. Although he lowered his strikeout rate from 36.6% in 2021 to 28.5%, he hit only two home runs.
The 6-foot-5 Hilliard, selected in the 15th round of the 2015 draft out of Wichita State, has speed and power and can play any outfield position. But at the plate, he never lived up to the Rockies’ expectations. He hit a career-high 14 home runs last season and finished up his Colorado career with 29 homers in 570 career at-bats.
Spain, 24, was a 10th-round pick by Atlanta in 2021. He is 1-5 with a 4.03 ERA in 47 career minor league games. A native of Honolulu, he played three seasons for the University of Hawaii-Hilo. Spain made 36 appearances last season, posting a 5.30 ERA and 4.62 strikeout-to-walk ratio at High-A Rome. Spain was not considered one of the Braves’ top 30 prospects by Baseball America.
