Compared to last year, 21-year-old shortstop Ezequiel Tovar is having a quiet spring training, but that doesn’t mean manager Bud Black has been unimpressed.

“We saw some good things from him last year and the thing that stood out for us was his self-assurance and self-confidence,” Black told reporters in Scottsdale, Ariz. “He’s comfortable in his own skin as a young player and he’s not trying to do too much.

Tovar, who will be a starter this season, entered Tuesday night’s Cactus League game against the Cubs hitting .250 with one home run, one double, five strikeouts and three walks. “On the offensive side, there is bat speed there and some pop in the bat for a 21-year-old, and that’s only going to get better as well,” Black said.
