Amazon’s pregame broadcast show was discussing the ceiling for Purdy as he helms the Niners’ offense for the remainder of the season. Sherman, who played for both teams in a storied NFL career, jumped in the conversation after retired lineman Andrew Whitworth talked about how Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers “got ways to scheme it up and not put pressure on him all the time to be that guy” with Purdy.
“That’s exactly the point I was going to make — he doesn’t have to be the guy. He’s out here bowling with the bumpers up,” Sherman said. “You talk about George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams — he doesn’t have to go out here and put the team on his back. He just has to be a passenger on this train. Kyle Shanahan is the conductor. It’s going to be a beautiful thing.”
