The Michael Gene Sullivan comedy is making its rolling world premiere
In Michael Gene Sullivan’s funny, fast-paced and crackling comedy “The Great Khan,” Jayden is a brave teen hero, Ant is a tough girl with a gun in her pocket and Genghis Khan is a barbaric, unredeemable conqueror from the Middle Ages. Or maybe not.
In the play, Jayden and his postal worker mom, Crystal, have secretly moved to a mostly White neighborhood to protect Jayden from a group of predatory boys who he foiled from sexually assaulting Ant. At his new school, Jayden’s out-of-touch history teacher, Mr. Adams, assigns him a team book report with oddball fellow student Gao Ming on Genghis Khan.
Actor Jerome Beck looks too old to play the 16-year-old Jayden, but he embodies the awkward, argumentative, video game-loving character with true boyish impulsiveness and a flashfire temper. Mikayla Lashae Bartholomew is proud, funny and authentic as Ant, a wounded girl so desperate to find a platonic male friend in Jayden that she’ll stop at nothing to get his attention.
