Daniel Donovan previously served in the U.S. Navy and worked for Department of Defense.

Daniel Donovan, second from right, was sworn in Thurs., Jan. 5, 2023, as the Harrisburg Bureau of Police's oldest cadet. He is 64 and was one of 10 men to to be sworn in Thursday. Donovan will now complete a six-month police academy at the Harrisburg Area Community College. By the time they hit their 60s, many Pennsylvanians are likely thinking about retirement and all of its benefits — more time for hobbies, vacations, and enjoying their golden years.

Thursday’s swearing-in ceremony at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg made Donovan the city’s oldest police cadet on record, as well as the oldest cadet to participate in a Harrisburg Area Community College police academy, according to college officials. Before becoming a police officer, Donovan served for 21 years as an attorney in the U.S. Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps. His naval career was followed by 13 years as a senior civilian attorney with the U.S. Department of Defense.

Donovan said his wife and three children fully supported his decision to forego retirement and become a Harrisburg police officer. Carter said he wants younger people to be inspired to pursue law enforcement careers after watching Donovan enter the police force in his 60s.
