Voters in Multnomah County, Oregon will decide a November ballot measure focused on gender-related language in the county charter amid rising crime rates in Portland.
, conducted by local firm DHM Research, showed that nearly half of the 500 Portlanders who responded felt unsafe walking alone at night in their own neighborhood. Of those who felt unsafe, 78% told researchers they were afraid of being physically assaulted.
Earlier this year, Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese sounded alarm over the number of incarcerations for violent crimes in the county. He added that the number of people in custody who were suspected of murder or attempted murder was the highest it had been for 30 years. Data for 2021 also showed that the Multnomah County district attorney's office declined to file charges in roughly 35% of felony cases referred to them by police.
"The County Board of Commissioners is required by law to pass those recommendations through to the voters. The voters will decide," she added."Multnomah County is working hard to protect the public, investing more than $342 million in public safety through our County jails, district attorney and sheriff’s office."
