To that end, researchers at Case have been working for four years to develop the next generation of electrolytes that can render utility-size battery systems less costly, more efficient and more safe. The batteries operate kind of like a fuel cell, he said, which takes gases that flow through a stack of electrodes and converts those gases into electricity.
The plan is to come up with low-cost, high performing electrolytes that are also safer because they are based instead on strong hydrogen-bonding networks and “microemulsions” that are basically a mixture of oil and water, Savinell said.
