Mount Baldy in Southern California has proven to be very dangerous for hikers of all levels — and this weekend’s record snow could be an ominous sign of things to come.
Unprepared hikers facing challenging terrain seem to be the common denominator. The landscape is unstable, slippery and exposed. Unpredictable weather provides an additional factor to consider, with frigid temperatures reaching negative wind chills, high winds and snow all common occurrences. Hikers have to watch out for falling ice, too. Many are injured when ice breaks off trees, with chunks sometimes as large as bowling balls — or even bigger.
Cellphone service is also spotty, and hikers often can’t get an emergency call out or check the trail map unless it’s a hard copy. A member of the West Valley Search and Rescue team searches for a missing hiker on Mount Baldy during a January mission.One big reason visitors end up in situations they’re not equipped for: Temperatures at Mount Baldy’s 10,064-foot summit can vary 20-30 degrees from its base, leading hikers into trouble if they aren’t carrying enough water or clothing.
The 45-person, all-volunteer West Valley Search and Rescue that Vetere heads responds to all sorts of calls, ranging from twisted ankles and missing hikers to the worst kind of emergencies. Some hikers who can’t be reached by helicopter must wait up to four hours for Vetere’s team to hike to them, in the same conditions that landed them in troubling situations.
