Spot, the company behind the messenger-style AI tool for anonymous workplace harassment reporting, has recently shifted its focus to the role of witnesses in reporting workplace harassment and discrimination in the workforce and, today, released a new report on its findings.
on its findings. The major takeaway? Companies cannot afford to overlook witnesses in these instances. Research has always been a cornerstone for the product that exists as the brainchild of Dr. Julia Shaw, a psychological researcher who’s spent much of her adult life studying the ways in which people form and report on memories. Recently, while reviewing data from talktospot.
An overwhelming majority of participants had witnessed harassment and discrimination and most aren’t telling HR. “Typically harassment and discrimination are perceived as negative events. It is likely that when someone witnesses such events, they become unhappy and make others unhappy when they tell them about it. This means that harassment and discrimination don’t just affect those targeted by such behavior, but can infect the whole company culture, continuing to spread unless something is done to rectify the situation.
The study found that 78% of witnesses who did tell HR or others in the workplace about the incident did so without first seeking permission from the person who was the target of harassment or discrimination. This can be problematic because anonymity is then jeopardized, there’s a potential for trust to be broken and it can lead to a culture of gossiping in the workplace.
