Former U.S. Marine Gerry Brooks died alone at a nursing home in Maine, abandoned and all but forgotten. Then the funeral home posted a notice asking if anyone would serve as a pallbearer or simply attend his burial. Within minutes, it was turning away volunteers to carry his casket.
Linda Gordon Enterprise Lions Club Representative Barry Moore’s office handled more than 4,000 cases for the constituents in his district–District 2, soon to become District 1, Shannon Smith, Constituent Advocate and caseworker for Moore’s office, recently told the Enterprise Lions Club meeting, where she was the keynote speaker.
People are also reading… Smith’s largest case load is in dealing with VA, given the large number of active-duty military, veterans, and retirees in the district. She is charged with helping veterans navigate the system when applying for benefits. She and her staff are in touch with Veterans’ Affairs on a regular basis to determine what information is needed for a veteran’s case to move forward toward a resolution. Monthly reports are sent to constituents detailing the progress of their claim.
Smith reported that she does not deal with all federal agencies, but the ATF is one on her docket, and her office can facilitate getting gun permits when necessary. Immigration is another agency she deals with. She stated that they are still working to help Afghan interpreters leave the country and come to the U.S.
