The top Trump ally in the House is setting his sights on filling the remaining two years of former senator Johnny Isakson’s term.
Rep. Douglas A. Collins is expected to challenge Sen. Kelly Loeffler in Georgia, according to multiple House officials familiar with his plans, a move that will trigger an intraparty Republican brawl between a top defender of President Trump and a business executive who was appointed to the post by Gov. Brian Kemp.
House officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk frankly about Collins’s plans, which were first report by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. A spokeswoman for the congressman declined to comment.The news comes as Democrats are eyeing Georgia as a top 2020 target in their bid to retake the Senate.
But she has faced questions about whether she is conservative enough. On Monday, she accused fellow GOP Sen. Mitt Romney of trying to “appease the left” in favoring witnesses in Trump’s impeachment trial.
