Roy said he remembered the Bandera meeting well — and many like it as he toured the district, explaining to angry supporters of former President Donald Trump that he believed it was unconstitutional for Congress to object to the electors sent by the states, asin the House did Jan. 6. Roy has consistently said he believed Congress’ role was simply to count the votes, nothing more. He said he thinks most of those who came to the meetings were satisfied with the explanation.

“I’m going, well, some people are claiming there’s fraud, let me go see the fraud, and pushing on the White House — show me the fraud,” Roy said in an interview with Hearst Newspapers. “I saw some of the lawsuits, and I looked at some of the stuff, and I talked to people in Atlanta, Pennsylvania and all over the place. I was taking in information and talking and looking.”

The certification vote, which Roy counts among his proudest moments in office, is perhaps the clearest example of the approach to Congress that has helped the two-term Republican build a strong base of support in his district, a ruby red swath of the Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin where he drew 84 percent of the vote over three GOP primary challengers this year.

“He’s not a typical politician,” Haueter said. “You don’t get the sense from him that he’s just jerking you around, giving you the talking points. You get the sense he’s being honest with you, because he says hard things, and he says things people might not want to hear.” The Republican-led Legislature last year redrew the district to be much redder — and much more friendly to Trump, the former president Roy had angered repeatedly. Trump would have won the new district by 20 percentage points, according to state data. Under the new boundaries, Roy drew three primary challengers. The most successful of them drew just 8 percent of the vote.
