The proposed legislation would amend several parts of New York State mental hygiene law, and mandate community-led, independent response teams to address those in crisis instead of law enforcement."This week is advocacy for us," said Wanda Wilson, a local pastor and member of the Rochester Police Accountability Board alliance. "Also, there’s Daniel’s Law coalitions that are put in place, and we’re always having town halls and communicating.

"I think we have to understand that police are not created to respond to these sort of events," said Hawk. "We have highly trained, highly educated people who are experts in their fields who should be responding to our neighbors. I think that Daniel’s Law is critical for us to finally start treating our neighbors with a little bit more humanity.""This is an opportunity to fill the one gap that we have, which is how we respond when someone calls for help.
