The IRS has announced Jan. 29 as the official start date of the 2024 tax season, and expects more than 128.7 million tax returns to be filed by the April 15 tax deadline. The IRS pushed back the federal tax return filing and payment deadline to June 17, in the wake of the devastating flooding that hit San Diego County this winter.
“The decision follows a highly successful, limited pilot during the 2024 filing season, where 140,803 taxpayers in 12 states filed their taxes using Direct File,” the agency said in a news release. The program got good reviews from participants in a survey and interest from people in states where it was not available, the agency said.It helped people who used the program save money. Nearly half of users said they had paid for tax preparation services the year before. By filing for free through the IRS, taxpayers who used Direct File saved an estimated $5.6 million this season, according to the Treasury Department.
90 percent of respondents ranked their experience as excellent or above average, and 90 percent of those who used customer support rated that as excellent or above average. 86 percent of respondents said their experience with Direct File “increased their trust in the IRS,” the agency reported.
