The first time Lee Loe tried to organize a Sing Out for Peace in Houston, the turnout was dismal.
“Lee was able to solicit more from people than anybody else,” Courtney said. “She could find their strength and talent to help pursue truth, justice, liberty and joy — she was very committed to that.” Lee was not the loudest Houston protester or leader of any group, but “most people in the movement knew her,” said Batisse. Her connections “ranged from radicals and peaceniks, to older people and Quaker Friends.”
Shari showed me a black-and-white photo of the family station wagon. It was adorned with an “Another Mother for Peace” bumper sticker next to one supporting the mayoral bid of Black civil rights activist and legislator Curtis Graves. Both may have led to scrutiny from Houston police. According to family lore, a doctor friend of Hardy’s once heard that the Loes were what police called “sweet-smelling,” and likely under surveillance.
