After trading Matt Olson, Matt Chapman, Chris Bassitt and Sean Manaea and letting Mark Canha walk in free agency, the A’s are, by their own admission, in a down period of their player cycle.For baseball fans, the A’s opener showed that while Oakland may struggle as a team this year, there are individual performances that should make the club worth watching.
A Kyle Schwarber leadoff home run and a troublesome, four-run fourth inning mired a solid performance for the 29-year-old ace. In five innings, Montas struck out six batters on 92 pitches.
