SENATE President Juan Miguel Zubiri sees the ratification of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnerships free trade agreement within the first quarter of the year.'RCEP ratification is a priority of the Senate. As a matter of fact, we have a hearing on the seventh, which is Tuesday, for all the other stakeholders. We might have one more hearing for the oppositors but eventually, hopefully, we will be able to get 16 votes to ratify that,' he said in an ambush interview.
There is a protection clause for the next 10 years, there will not be a free flow of goods for the next 10 years for agriculture just to protect them,' he said.Zubiri expressed confidence that the 10-year period is enough for the farming sector to modernize.'That is enough time to be more competitive but in the meantime, let us not sacrifice our exports because it is a huge market, so we are pushing for it,' he said.
