Share to twitterThe Tampa Bay Rays have been given the option to look at playing in two markets -- St. Petersburg and Montreal -- but the announcement has implications beyond those two markets. With MLB wrapping up their two-day owners' meetings in New York on Thursday, no news leapt out more than the word that the Tampa Bay Rays would be free to explore being a two-city team, splitting time between Tropicana Field and Montreal.
Above it all, the news was left to hang in the air. Questions drifted about as if a deep fog rolling in off the yacht basin bays. But this move to explore a two-city option is more than just about proding Tampa Bay and Montreal to get new ballparks. It plays to a larger set of markets. It also doesn’t make a lot of sense for Montreal. I mean, just how much momentum on funding can you get with, “We’d like to hang out with you part of the time, but I’m not really ready to make that big commitment.”? Sure, it feels great to be loved, but at some point there comes that awkward question, “Where is this relationship really headed?”
