How does that impact catcher? It would seem to take veteran Sandy Leon out of the mix for an opening day roster spot.
: The only thing to determine is who is the very occasional backup shortstop to Seager. Last year, the Rangers slid Semien back over to short, but Semien is a second baseman now. Of the utility guy candidates, Smith is the best shortstop and probably profiles most as a long-term utility guy. Mathias could get some time at DH when Garver catches or at first against the occasional lefty.
