Manager Chris Woodward said Smith showed almost no emotion, uncommon for a guy in his debut, while lashing three singles.Smith, 24, had been hitting .273 at Triple-A Round Rock, but had a .431 OBP and .862 OPS in April. He’s started games at short, third and center field. Smith is expected to play primarily at third base, even if it cuts into the playing time for Andy Ibáñez and Charlie Culberson, Woodward said.
Smith has impressed the Rangers since they scouted him last year with his poise and game-time competitiveness. He was among a small group of players invited to what amounted to a leadership training conference in January. On Monday, leaning on his bat after a round of ground balls and batting practice, he seemed surprisingly at ease.
