Ralph Rucci opted to present his couture proposals in the form of illustrations again. This time, his technical drawings are shown in dialogue with the interpretive flourishes of his fellow Philadelphian. Rucci categorizes these as being like a “suggestion in four lines and a wash of watercolor,” a description that captures some of the lightness of this collection, with its light aprons and tunics that float above narrow pants or spill out from the bottom of jackets.
One of the things that distinguishes this collection is the predominance of separates. A tunic and pants, as in the opening look, can be worn as a set, or mixed and matched with other pieces, and the addition of a cashmere stole to a hoodie and drawstring, all in knitted oatmeal cashmere, adds comfort to the offering. These are clothes that work with and for a client.
There is a deceptive simplicity of line in this collection, and in Rucci’s work in general, that belies his complex cuts and decorative techniques, which are as complicated as they are marvelous. Of note for fall is the slightly higher waistline and the calligraphy embroidery that translates the designer’s own ink strokes on paper onto a garment via needle on cloth.
Don’t mistake look 38 for a straight-up column dress; it’s a one-seam wonder spiral cut on the bias that lends it, in Rucci’s words, “ethereal movement.
