Peru’s Kimberly Garcia said she and other Pan American Games competitors realized something was amiss “since the first kilometer” of the 20k event.

The world record she set in the 20-kilometer race walk, however, was quickly scratched when organizers determined that the course in Santiago, Chile, was set up incorrectly. Competitors reportedly said they suspected it might have been short by as many as three kilometers, or almost two miles.That could explain how Garcia was initially able to smash the record.
