A Quentin Tarantino-directed True Romance would have been exciting to see, and it's also fun to imagine a Tony Scott-helmed Reservoir Dogs.
Tony Scott was a celebrated director who made explosive action movies, and Quentin Tarantino is known for his razor-sharp dialogue that's heavy on pop culture references, but despite their different styles, they almost directed each other's movies. Scott directed the Tarantino-written True Romance, which has all the flare of a Tarantino screenplay and the huge shootouts and sheen that Scott was known for.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY However, both of these movies could have looked a lot different, as Tarantino gave Scott the choice of which movie he'd rather direct, and Scott's first choice was Reservoir Dogs. However, after Tarantino figured out that he could self-finance what would become his directorial debut, Scott then quickly accepted True Romance before any other filmmaker had the chance .
However, Scott's version of Reservoir Dogs would definitely have been more sprawling than Quentin Tarantino's. Reservoir Dogs doesn't show the heist, but Tarantino has mentioned that the only reason he didn't include the sequence in the film was that he couldn't afford it with its small $1 million budget . Given that Scott was an established filmmaker compared to Tarantino at the time and studios afforded him bigger budgets, that would have been the case with Reservoir Dogs.
What Tarantino’s True Romance Would Have Looked Like Given that Quentin Tarantino partly self-financed the low-budget Reservoir Dogs, it isn't clear whether he would have done the same for True Romance if he sold the Reservoir Dogs screenplay. But either way, as Tarantino didn't exactly have the clout that Scott did at the time, it would have been made with a much lower budget.
The filmmaker explained, "I would have done my original ending, where Clarence dies. And I would have had all the comedy and all the romance, but it would have been a little rougher." But more interestingly, Tarantino had one very different casting choice for Drexl Spivey, the white pimp who thinks he's black. The now-iconic character is played brilliantly by Gary Oldman, who disappears into the role with the dreadlocks, wonky eye, and Kangol leather cap.
