In reality, he may have had episodes of illness as early as the mid-1760s. In 1765, the king was sick with what appeared to be a severe, persistent cold and kept away from the prime minister, whom he’d met with regularly, for months.
The queen became “a shadow of her previous self,” Hadlow added. “Always slender, she was now ‘dreadfully reduced,’ painfully thin and drawn. Her hair turned gray. Her personality darkened, she grew suspicious, irritable and resentful.” Their six daughters were kept at home, where they had little chance of finding husbands. Only three of them ever married, and most were above childbearing age by the time they did, said Hadlow. George was reluctant to marry his daughters off to foreign princes and send them to live abroad. And after the king became ill, Charlotte believed their daughters were obligated to stay home and care for their father.
