Leaders of Japan, Australia, the United States and India said Tuesday they oppose all attempts to "change the status quo by force, particularly in the Indo-Pacific."
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announce the Quad Fellowship, a scholarship program that will bring together American, Japanese, Australian and Indian masters and doctoral students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to study in the United States, during the Quad Leaders Summit at Kantei in Tokyo on May 24, 2022.
"As Russia's invasion of Ukraine is shaking the fundamental principles of the international order... [we] confirmed that unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force will never be tolerated anywhere, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region," Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said. After talks in Tokyo, the Quad nations also agreed on a new maritime monitoring initiative that is expected to bolster surveillance of Chinese activity in the region.
