Quezon City denies permit to rally; groups to assert rights during Sona
THE Quezon City Government has denied the request of progressive groups to conduct protest actions along Commonwealth Avenue during the first State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Before the release of the letter, the Philippine National Police had repeatedly said that protest actions will only be allowed in freedom parks. The PNP will deploy almost 22,000 police personnel and force multipliers to ensure the peace and order during Marcos’ Sona on July 25 at the House of Representatives. In response, Bayan Secretary General Renato Reyes said the denial of their application “violates the law and our constitutional rights.”
He said authorities cannot invoke traffic inconvenience as a basis to deny such a permit based on Batas Pambansa 880.
