It's our new favorite wearable literature.
style team is, well, into. This week, we highlight artist Rosie LaJaguara, who makes wearable art that also happens to be fashion.Teen Vogue
about her experience studying fashion at Parsons School of Design. In those days, Rosie liked making fashion she describes as “crazy, avant-garde art pieces” — items that were distinct, albeit still connected to the wearable art pieces she makes today. Rosie, who grew up in Austin, Texas, and was raised in a “multimedia sort of household,” says she had been around creativity from a young age, since both of her parents were artists. So Rosie spent much of her free time making ceramics, paintings, and drawings. Her mom often made her clothes and costumes, and early on dressing became a way for Rosie to express herself, because she was “really shy as a kid.
It wasn’t until high school that Rosie really became interested in fashion, by immersing herself in it online. “At that point I had total access" to all the fashion shows, she says. On top of this, her grandparents got her a subscription to, and she started going to thrift stores and buying oversize items, and then slashing and piecing things together. “I was really inspired seeing clothing on the runway, and I started to think about maybe being a fashion designer.
“Writing poetry for me is something that happens instantly, like a compulsion, a need to reflect on something noticed or felt that may be hard to capture,” says Rosie. “A lot of people see my work as whimsical, and I think that is true. I try to make light out of things that feel serious.”
