Puerto Rican Governor Jenniffer González-Colón appealed to President-elect Donald Trump to address a direct threat from Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, who proposed an invasion of U.S. territory Puerto Rico. González-Colón highlighted the national security implications of Maduro's statement and emphasized Puerto Rico's enduring role as a U.S. territory.

The governor of Puerto Rico, Jenniffer González-Colón, has appealed to President-elect Donald Trump to intervene after Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro threatened to invade the U.S. territory. In a letter addressed to Trump, González-Colón expressed her concern over Maduro's recent statement, made at the end of the 'International Anti-Fascist Festival' in Caracas, where he suggested an invasion of Puerto Rico.

Maduro, who was recently inaugurated for a third six-year presidential term despite international condemnation of his re-election as illegitimate, made the threat in apparent response to Trump's remarks about U.S. control of strategic locations like the Panama Canal and Greenland. Maduro stated, 'Just as the North has an agenda of colonization, we have an agenda of liberation.' He pledged that 'the freedom of Puerto Rico is pending, and we will achieve it with Brazilian troops,' according to Latin America Reports.González-Colón warned that Maduro's statement constituted an 'open threat to the United States, our national security, and stability in the region.' She urged Trump's incoming administration to respond swiftly and make it clear to Maduro that the United States 'will protect American lives and sovereignty and will not bow down to the threats of petty, murderous dictators.' González-Colón emphasized Puerto Rico's long history as an integral part of the United States, dating back to 1898. She pointed out that Puerto Ricans were granted American citizenship in 1917 and have served alongside fellow Americans in every U.S. military conflict since World War I.She also highlighted the significant role Puerto Rico plays in U.S. national security, citing the presence of Fort Buchanan – the only U.S. Army installation in the Caribbean – as well as National Guard facilities like Camp Santiago, Fort Allen, and Muniz Air National Guard Base, all of which strategically support U.S. military exercises and operations. Additionally, Puerto Rico houses critical U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection assets and units that contribute to securing U.S. borders and combating drug trafficking networks that finance the Maduro regime. González-Colón emphasized that the United States shares a maritime boundary with Venezuela through Puerto Rico. She concluded her letter by stating that Maduro's calls for an invasion are aimed at eliminating the U.S. presence in the region and expanding his own influence. González-Colón expressed her willingness to work with Trump and his administration to counter these threats and support the Venezuelan people in their pursuit of freedom. She also expressed her hope for meaningful discussions to further enhance Puerto Rico's role in national security and address the growing presence of adversaries in the region.
