Debate over a bill to ban transition medical care for transgender youth snowballed into a dramatic scene Tuesday in the Texas House after protesters began chanting and the speaker called for troopers to clear the gallery.Democrats had just made their first attempt to obstruct or at least delay the bill using a procedural tactic when a protester in the gallery shouted, “Trans kids deserve more.” Others quickly joined in.

Senate Bill 14 would stop doctors from prescribing puberty blockers and hormone medications and performing surgeries to treat minors diagnosed with gender dysphoria, or with psychological distress about their gender identity being different from their sex at birth. Republicans have argued minors are not old enough to make what can amount to life-altering medical decisions and that the care can lead to negative physical and mental side effects.By early Tuesday, hundreds of demonstrators for and against the bill had crowded the halls of the Capitol. LGBTQ advocates carried signs saying, “My faith does not discriminate” and “God loves trans people” and held a banner from the upper level of the rotunda reading “LET TRANS KIDS GROW UP.

Opponents of the bill chanted, “We’re here, we’re queer, we will not disappear” and “What do we want? Trans rights. When do we want it? Now,” as troopers herded them toward the Capitol’s south exit.
