HONG KONG—A few dozen weary protesters clad in black sat on the floor of the arrivals hall of Hong Kong’s airport early Monday morning, on the fourth day of a sit-in to draw attention to their fight against the city’s government.

By noon, the number had grown to 1,000. Three hours later, more than 10,000 had arrived by train and bus, overwhelming one of the world’s largest passenger terminals.
